Relaunch of Young Co-operatives Action Kit

Action Kit Teacher's guide cover

The Young Co-operatives Action Kit, a free, downloadable guide which outlines everything schools and young people need to know before setting up a Young Co-operative, has been relaunched with new activities and a brighter, more interesting format.

The Action Kit, which covers everything from deciding what your Young Co-operative is going to do to holding meetings, budgeting, making the rules and selling its products, right up to evaluating the project, is now broken down into a Teacher’s guide and separate activity packs for KS2 and KS3/4 students. All importantly, it introduces what co-operatives are, where they came from and what makes them different to other types of businesses, as well as providing case studies from other Young Co-operatives as inspiration.

Lisa Ball, a student at All Hallows Catholic College in Macclesfield, helped make the design more young person-friendly whilst on a summer work placement at the Co-operative College, and assisted with the updating of activities. All Hallows is a member of the network of Co-operative Business and Enterprise Colleges supported by the Co-operative College and the Co-operative Group and its students run a wide range of Young Co-operatives in school, which sell everything from candles, jewellery and snacks to quizzes and art materials within the school community.

There are now almost 200 registered members of Young Co-operatives, most in the UK but with others as far afield as Africa, the USA and India. Young Co-operatives is a free scheme which encourages young people to set up and run their own enterprises as co-operatives. Many Young Co-operatives run healthy eating tuck shops selling fairly traded products. Other models for Young Co-operatives include horticultural and recycling businesses.

Julie Thorpe from the Co-operative College said: “We hope the new Action Kit will inspire lots more groups of young people to form Young Co-operatives!”
